Jaco Venter takes the helm at Welwitschia

Welwitschia Insurance Brokers’ new CEO, Jaco Venter, says leadership is about responsibility, not ambition, a philosophy that has guided a career spanning junior roles to executive management.

Having started as a junior broker focused on new claims, the newly appointed CEO has steadily moved through the ranks, taking on roles where he could support teams, improve systems and help people perform at their best.

“My passion for leadership developed organically through responsibility rather than ambition,” Venter explained.

“Being entrusted with this role is both a privilege and a responsibility I take seriously,” Venter said.

Venter’s education provided a solid foundation for his career.

He holds a bachelor of science in environmental sciences and a postgraduate diploma in advanced project management and is a qualified underground mine surveyor.

He has also completed a programme in risk management (FIISA) and the senior management development programme (SMDP) at Stellenbosch Business School.

“Education gives you tools, but experience shapes how you apply them,” Venter added.

People at the heart of success

He believes an effective CEO balances clarity, humility and decisiveness.

“It’s about setting direction, creating alignment and enabling others to succeed,” Venter explained.

He added that listening is just as important as leading, noting that "credibility is built through consistency and integrity”.

His key leadership tip is simple: focus on people first.

“Strong results follow when people feel trusted, supported and challenged in the right way,” he explained. “Continuous learning, self-awareness and accountability are non-negotiables for any leader.”

Among his proudest achievements is contributing to Welwitschia’s growth while maintaining a client-centric culture. Building high-performing teams and strengthening client relationships in a highly regulated industry stand out.

Venter said the biggest challenges came from managing change.

“Whether adapting to market shifts, regulatory developments or internal transformation, these moments reinforced the importance of resilience, communication, and thoughtful decision-making under pressure,” he explained.

Trust as the glue

Over the next two years, Venter plans to focus on stability, sustainable growth and operational efficiency.

“Rather than radical change, my approach is one of refinement and continuous improvement,” he explained.

Enhancing communication, clarifying accountability and supporting innovation where it benefits clients are central to his plan. “Leadership must remain visible and accessible across the business, reinforcing trust and shared purpose,” Venter said.

A typical day mixes strategic planning, stakeholder engagement and operational oversight, keeping him connected to the realities on the ground.

Outside work, Venter enjoys golf, cars and quality time with loved ones. He advises young leaders: “Be patient with yourself, stay curious and don’t underestimate the power of integrity. Be the leader you would have wanted when you first started."
