Meet Ashwyn Mberi, ED of NTV Afrika
Mberi’s passion for television began at an early age, driven by his love for the medium’s ability to connect and inspire the human spirit. “My early experiences were just good enough to keep me hopeful and just bad enough to force me to create my own luck,” he reflects. These formative moments, both challenging and inspiring, shaped him into the motivated and relentless professional he is today - driven by human connection through TV, especially between Africans.
Storytelling
Mberi’s professional career began as a presenter at the national broadcaster. He directed and performed on creative platforms for a decade before joining Network Media Hub (formerly Namibia Media Holdings) to present and direct until there was a natural alignment between his output and his ambition to connect Africa, leading to the Executive Director role he currently holds.
“After I lost my mother as a child, the only thing that could cheer me up was Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) films,” he recalls. This revealed to him the power of storytelling on screen and how it can add real value to the human experience.
Purpose
For Mberi, leadership is grounded in human connection, curiosity and purpose. “People excel at what they love to do, and the responsibility of creating a space in which they love what they do lies with me as a director,” he explains. Guided by intentional structure balanced with flexibility, he believes TV is a precise art form that can be highly rewarding when respected.
Influenced by key figures such as his father, older brother, Ernst Venzke, Albe Botha, and his wife - a gifted lawyer and incredible companion - Mberi has built his career on lessons in discipline, passion, and attention to detail.
Vision
Looking ahead, Mberi envisions NTV Afrika as a network that truly lives its mantra: “Borderless Boundless.” He sees the platform connecting Africans and reflecting their experiences using their own voices beyond boundaries and borders. Whether taking a step back to reflect or facing challenges head-on “like buffalos,” Mberi leads with purpose and resilience.
Outside work, he finds balance by respecting his schedule and making time to rest, grateful that his creative work keeps his soul well fed.
