Oberholzer takes helm at ESP Projects

For Barend Oberholzer, the newly appointed executive director of Emeraldsand Platforms (ESP) Projects, leadership has never been about the position he holds but about creating opportunities that leave a lasting impact.

Throughout his career, one lesson has stood out. Leading complex projects with diverse stakeholders requires patience, trust and clear communication.

"I've learned that leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about bringing together the right people, making informed decisions and remaining focused on the bigger picture,” he told Careers.

Oberholzer's career began in finance and grew from there to internal auditing, governance, business development and operations across several industries.

Each experience shaped the leader he is today.

“These experiences have taught me that successful organisations are built on more than sound financial management," he said.

"They require strategic leadership, effective project execution and the ability to bring people together around a common vision."

Positive legacy

Oberholzer began working at ESP in September 2025 as manager for the executive directors within the group.

Today, he oversees the planning, governance and commercial development of projects at ESP Projects, ensuring ideas become meaningful outcomes that benefit communities.

“Our objective is not simply to complete projects but to create lasting infrastructure, generate employment, develop local skills, attract investment and leave a positive legacy for future generations," he explains.

Integrity remains at the heart of everything he does, alongside accountability and collaboration. He believes the best leaders empower those around them and create environments where people feel valued.

Looking ahead, Oberholzer believes technology and sustainability will continue to transform the project industry, but says people will remain the driving force behind success.

His advice to young Namibians is simple: ”Never stop learning. Seek mentors, gain practical experience and don't be afraid to start at ground level.”

For Oberholzer, success is measured by the opportunities created for others.

"I remain motivated by the opportunity to create meaningful impact, develop others and contribute to projects that help shape Namibia's future."
