New Erongo council chair targets growth and service delivery

Lazarus Kanelombe, who took over as chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council in December, is responsible for guiding the council’s governance and operations, overseeing regional development initiatives, and ensuring programmes and policies benefit both rural and urban communities.

“This role provides an opportunity to translate principles of accountability and practical action into real outcomes for our people,” Kanelombe said in a recent interview.

Under his leadership, the council aims to implement its strategic plan 2025–2030, which focuses on economic recovery and transformation, strengthening governance and service delivery and promoting human development and community resilience.

Kanelombe said he is focused on addressing key challenges during his tenure, including reliable water access in rural areas, housing shortages and road infrastructure.

He also aims to expand economic opportunities for young people through vocational training and employment initiatives.

Service all residents

Kanelombe said water shortages, housing and land constraints, and pressure on infrastructure are driven by population growth and increasing urban migration.

“Development must reach all constituencies and not only focus on urban centres, to address poverty, unemployment, and access to essential services,” he said.

He added that road upgrades and improved connectivity are a key priority to support economic activity and ensure communities have reliable access to healthcare, education and markets.

Community wellbeing

He said he plans to work closely with the Office of the Governor, local authorities, line ministries, traditional leaders and the private sector to ensure coordinated and sustainable development.

Kanelombe also emphasised that accountability and transparency guide his leadership, with success measured through improvements in infrastructure, service delivery, youth employment and overall community wellbeing.

By the end of his term, Kanelombe said he aims to leave Erongo more connected, resilient and inclusive.

He said the council’s work should help build a stronger local economy, improve access to housing and services, and expand opportunities for young people. He called for a collective effort by government, communities, businesses and development partners to achieve sustainable growth and shared prosperity.
