Silent defender securing digital frontline
Thembiwe Elias is an emerging cybersecurity professional who joined Green Enterprise Solutions in October 2025 as an intern in the company's networking department, where she is gaining hands-on experience protecting critical digital systems.
Elias came to cybersecurity through curiosity rather than a rigid plan.
Working behind the scenes to keep critical systems secure, she is carving out a career in one of the fastest-growing fields in the modern economy.
Elias’s daily responsibilities are diverse and demanding.
She monitors network activity, identifies potential vulnerabilities, and supports the implementation of security solutions across various departments.
Her work also extends to managing robust backup systems and detecting unsecured devices that could compromise network integrity.
Through her work she has come to a vital realisation about the industry. “Cybersecurity is not just about systems,” Elias says. “It’s about people, awareness and preventing risks before they happen.”
Digital deep-dive
Her path didn't always point to a career in cybersecurity.
Elias began with a broad interest in technology and a desire to understand the mechanics of digital infrastructure.
However, as her understanding progressed, she discovered the high stakes of IT protection.
“I became fascinated by the idea of not just building systems, but protecting them,” she explains. This shift from construction to defence became a calling, transforming her general curiosity into a focused professional path.
During her internship, Elias has learned that technical barriers are only half the battle.
She is currently developing a cybersecurity awareness training programme for both her colleagues and the company's clients. This initiative addresses a fundamental truth she has observed: human behaviour is often the most significant vulnerability in any security chain.
“Even the strongest systems can fail if people are not aware,” Elias says. “A big part of cybersecurity is changing how users interact with technology.”
Future horizons
Looking forward, Elias continues to deepen her expertise in network security and risk management, with long-term aspirations to explore ethical hacking.
She also stands as a passionate advocate for diversity in the industry.
Her message to young women considering the field is that there is ample space for them to succeed. “There is space for you in this field. You don’t need to know everything at the beginning, you just need the willingness to start. I’m here to grow within the tech space and help shape it.”
She adds: "I don't need to fit into the tech space, I'm here to grow within it and help shape it."
