GIPF welcomes Mbambus-Shikongo
Saara Mbambus-Shikongo joined the Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF) on 1 April as personal assistant to the fund’s chief executive officer, Martin Inkumbi. She takes up the role with a master of business administration (MBA) qualification.
A typical working day for her involves a mix of administrative duties and strategic support to the CEO.
“My day starts with reviewing emails and prioritising correspondences to ensure that urgent matters are addressed promptly. I am responsible for providing professional and comprehensive technical, administrative and advisory support to the CEO,” she explained.
Mbambus-Shikongo is also responsible for interpreting and advising on key business indicators and reporting on strategic and operational progress on matters arising from the executive committee and relevant business forums to the CEO. She also coordinates exco and other management committee meetings, including taking minutes.
Asked about stepping into the role, she described the transition as “smooth and enriching,” crediting a well-structured onboarding process and a culture of professionalism.
Valuing balance
While she faced early challenges adapting to new systems and processes, she has since found her footing and values the role’s balance between professional growth and personal responsibilities.
“I have faced challenges in getting to know the organisation and its processes. I have had to learn to use new technology and systems, which has required some additional time and effort,” she said.
Despite the challenges and demands of the role, Mbambus-Shikongo believes it offers a healthy work-life balance.
“The fund values employees’ well-being and promotes a healthy work environment. While the role is demanding, the flexibility and understanding from management allow me to fulfil my responsibilities as a wife and mother without compromising my professional commitments,” she concluded.
