Ogilvy’s CEO on creativity that gets results
For Megan Pritchard, chief executive officer (CEO) and shareholder of Ogilvy Namibia, effective leadership means balancing creativity with business strategy while ensuring that people and consumers remain at the centre of decision-making.
Appointed CEO in October 2024, Pritchard oversees the agency's long-term strategy, financial stewardship and operational vision, drawing on more than a decade of experience within the business.
She joined Ogilvy Namibia in 2014 as an intern after completing a bachelor's degree in business marketing at Stadio University, formerly known as Prestige Academy, in Cape Town.
Three months later, she secured a permanent position as an account executive and progressed through various leadership roles, becoming business unit manager in 2018 and chief operations director in 2019 before her appointment as CEO.
Her professional development has also included additional qualifications in digital marketing through Red & Yellow and advertising effectiveness through the World Advertising Research Centre (WARC).
Never stop learning
Reflecting on her leadership responsibilities, Pritchard believes that building a successful brand requires consistency, a clear understanding of consumers and the ability to distinguish meaningful change from passing trends.
Pritchard believes that leading an advertising agency in an industry shaped by fast-changing technology, evolving consumer behaviour and increased competition requires more than creative ideas.
"In an industry that changes almost daily, I believe you never really stop being a student," she told Careers.
She said businesses must understand their audiences rather than allow personal preferences to dictate marketing decisions.
For her, strong brands are built through long-term relationships and consistent strategies, rather than frequent changes in identity and direction.
"Brands don't belong to whoever happens to be managing them. They live in the minds of the people who buy them," she noted in her recent reflection on the agency's 30-year history.
Operating in Namibia's evolving market also requires an understanding of local consumers. Pritchard explained that strategies developed for other markets cannot simply be transferred to Namibia without considering local needs and behaviour.
"A campaign that works in Johannesburg will not automatically work in Windhoek," she said.
Her leadership philosophy also recognises the importance of creativity and measurable results working together. Drawing on Ogilvy's belief in combining creativity with effectiveness, she maintains that advertising must deliver more than visual appeal.
"Creativity that doesn't deliver is entertainment. Effectiveness without creativity leaves value on the table," she said.
Beyond business performance, Pritchard believes leadership requires self-awareness and confidence. Her advice to young Namibians entering the professional world is to recognise their abilities and remain patient with their development.
"The most valuable lesson I've learned is that if you don't believe in yourself, you cannot expect anyone else to," she said.
She adds that professional growth cannot be rushed, encouraging young people to respect their value, embrace experience and understand that meaningful success takes time.
