From revenue accountant to financial accountant in three years
Monika Abisai joined the Business and Intellectual Property Authority (BIPA) in December 2020 after completing her Public Accountants and Auditors Board (PAAB) articles in August 2020. She joined BIPA as a revenue accountant and worked her way up to senior internal auditor by July 2022. She was then appointed as financial accountant in December 2023.
For Abisai, there is nothing more exciting than the thrill of spearheading the end-of-the-month financial reports. “The end-of-the-month process can be quite challenging due to deadlines, but it is very exciting knowing that I am responsible for the meticulous task to ensure accurate financial reporting,” she said.
She added that she is required to ensures that financial information is correct and readily available for users to make informed decisions. The accountant easily describes her coworkers as close friends and maybe even family because of how closely they work together and the trust that comes from the nature of their work.
When asked about the legacy she would like to leave behind if she had to move on to another company, she earnestly spoke of how she wanted her colleagues to remember her. “Outside of family and close friends, my coworkers are likely the people I interact with the most and I would like to be remembered for my empathy and respect shown to them,” Abisai said.
Despite already having climbed the corporate ladder from one position to the next, she asserted that this is just the beginning of her career and that she hopes to have taken on even more responsibilities and hopefully a higher role within the company in the future. She also recognises that for her to reach her goal, she needs to gain more experience and skills, and that is exactly what she intends to do.
“I would like to continue developing my skills and knowledge in order to be able to take on more responsibility within BIPA,” Abisai said. With her determination to continue achieving her goals, she said the most appropriate advice she can give her peers and the youth is to try and gain as much exposure as you possibly can in areas pertaining to your field.
She noted that in doing this, you can easily become a ‘Jack of all trades’ and therefore be easily trainable and hireable. “The commerce world is so diverse. Try to gain as much exposure as possible."
